February 10, 2009
Chris Harristhal, employment law attorney, and Chris Riba, Wipfli LLP human resources consultant, teamed up to present a webinar on the latest developments in employment law and human resources practices affecting business given the current economic climate. Larkin Hoffman's Mark Geier served as moderator for the event.
Effective January 2009, changes in federal law took effect. The webinar focused on how recent changes in employment law and the economy are creating new risks for employers.
Highlights of the webinar included:
- Amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act, effective January 1, 2009, and how they expand the definition and protection of potentially disabled employees.
- Revisions to the Family and Medical Leave Act regulations, effective January 16, 2009, and how they affect employers, including leaves relating to caring for military personnel.
- The significant risks of terminating a problem employee through a layoff, job elimination, or other reduction in force, and how to avoid those risks.
- Noncompetition agreements--when are they enforceable?
